Abstract

This study attempted to survey the status of grandparents caring for infant or toddler grandchildren.
The subjects were 103 grandparents, who were caring for infant or toddler grandchildren and who lived in five apartment complexes in J city. The instrument used for this study was developed by the researchers and consisted of a Questionnaire composed of 42 items. The data were collected during the period from December 10, 1998 to March 20, 1999.
The results of this study were as follows ;
1. The motivation for grandchild-caring was ¢¥charging¢¥ (59 persons, 57.3%) and ¢¥wishing¢¥ (34 persons, 33.0%).
2. 70 persons(68.0%) answered that. There was a difference in the caring methods of parents and grandparents.
3. 98 of the subjects reported caring for a grandchild who not a burden, but 70 of subjects felt burdened by caring for a grandchild.
4. Most of subjects didn¢¥t find any coping methods to relieve caregiver burden.
The conclusion of this study, it is suggested that clinical implication of nurses should be noteworthy and grandparent caregivers should be assessed for caregiver burden.
